Krems is the heart of the wine region Kremstal-Wachau along the Danube and the entrance gate to the Waldviertel. The plains of the Wagram and Tulln close to the east. On the opposite Danube area the Dunkelsteinerwald extends. The right bank of the Danube at Mautern is populated since Roman times.
